Maleficarum

Welcome to my personal blog. Here I explore the process of creating my gothic folk‑horror TTRPG—an unsettling blend of rural dread, uncanny folklore, and bleak mysticism. The project draws heavily on films like The Wicker Man, Blood on Satan’s Claw, Witchfinder General, and most of all A Field in England, whose strange, feverish energy has shaped much of the game’s tone.

I began working on this nearly two years ago. At first, I built it on the Powered by the Apocalypse framework, but it quickly became clear that it wasn’t serving the experience I wanted. The mechanics felt too prominent, the roleplay too constrained—more gears than ghosts.

Then I discovered Liminal Horror. Born as a hack of Cairn (itself a hack of Into the Odd), it offered exactly what I’d been missing: rules that step back and let atmosphere, tension, and character take the lead. After digging into these systems, I finally found the foundation my game needed.
